✰The Garden's Table - DEVLOG✰

Helloo Everyone,

This is the devlog for my game "The Garden's Table" :) It's already released so go check it out!

  Making tea<3

This game was created in 5 days, for the My First Game Jam: Summer 2022. Before starting on this game, I was working on a different idea., but I decided to scrap that idea in favor of this one for a few reasons.

  1.  I didn't really feel a connection to any of the ideas I was coming up with for that game.
  2.  There was no clear idea of where the project was going. I was just adding things randomly and it was STRESSING me out.

So, I decided that work on a simple concept, using themes and things I enjoy. One night, when I was lying down to sleep I thought, "...plants.." and thus, "The Garden's Table" game idea was born :)

THE BEGINNING

To-do List<3

Starting out, i created an entire list of the BARE MINIMUM things this game needed to function. Ingredients, objects, buttons, flavors, mechanics, whatever. After implementing these bare minimum mechanics, I went back to the list and found places where i could again add features, to make the game feel/look nicer (once again keeping it simple so there weren't too many things to add early on). This helped to keep the motivation i would've lost if I just had a mountain of tasks (some of which unnecessary for a functioning game)

I created the prototype of everything that could be done in the game first, using various colorful squares and rectangles :) once i was satisfied with that, I started working on the art. which took a VERY long time, because of the art style I chose.

ISSUES

I tried to solve each issue using the simplest solution I could come up with, so as to keep the experience light, stress-free and fun :)

one of the main issues I faces was having the player switch between tea flavors. The ending the player would get was always of the first flavor they selected, rather than the last. I just added an "empty cup?" button as an easy fix, so the ending would now be reset if the player chose a different flavor. yay.

THE FUTURE

I want to do a few more things with this game.

  1. Add more recipes, ingredients, and flavors to the game.
  2.  work on the "Gathering Ingredients" part of the game a little.
  3. Initially, I wanted a few more characters (besides the cute black cat:))
  4. The art was really fun to make, so I wanted to share the process/videos of the making of it with everyone.

Thanks for reading<3 don't forget to try out the game for yourself :)

Thank you! <3

That's really cool to hear the origin of the Empty Cup button. I really like that button because it makes you choose if you want to stick with your current tea or try a different one, which seems like an easy choice, but having that one extra step in between really makes it feel more realistic. If we could choose another flavor and have it replace our existing flavor right away, we'd be able to fly right through all the options with less thought and less opportunity to appreciate the art of each one. Really neat how games can add so much significance to small details like that, and really funny how it can be glitches that lead us to workarounds that actually feel better to play (just my thoughts). I've played this game through 3 times now, looking forward to your next one!
